An agreement—known as a Blue Bond—between the Belizean government and The Nature Conservancy is generating an estimated USD $180 million over the next 20 years to support the country’s commitment to protect 30% of its ocean. Hol Chan, Belize's first marine protected area and one of the country's busiest tourism destinations, is a model for how new funding can help balance the needs of multiple ocean users, while conserving critical habitat for threatened species and promoting sustainable livelihoods along Belize’s Caribbean coast.
