According to popular published sources, the Wycliffe Bible by Wycliffe (White Cliff) was the first full translation of the Bible in English. It seems that Wycliffe lived in an religiously oppressed time. Reading Chaucer (who lived in a similar time) it becomes obvious that the clergy in the then, Catholic church were corrupt. One particularly well-known Catholic method of exploitation in the Middle Ages was the practice of selling indulgences, a monetary payment of penalty which, supposedly, absolved one of past sins and/or released one from purgatory after death.
Anyone who has read the Cantebury Tales will see that Chaucer condemned almost all of the clergy except one particular servant of God. Readers of Chaucer's works might come to the conclusion that Chaucer himself was a good man - or even a righteous man and that his works were not just for literature ( as some might have assumed) but were also written to inform those who had no mouth to voice out their own similar opinions.
As for Wycliffe , it seems that the leaders of his time were not happy with his translations. It is also strange to some of us why the King James Bible has so much notoriety when a good translation was already made several hundred years before hand ;and that, without needing a large team of committee of men to accomplish it.
Wycliffe was anti clerical in his views toward the Church. He felt the Church was corrupt and too institutionalized. Followers of Wycliffe were called Lollards. Wycliffe died of natural causes, but following his death in 1384, he was declared a heretic, and his body was dug up and burned. Who really knows that extent to which Wycliffe was instrumental in the world at that time. Of course, we can refer to historical records but, can we trust them, knowing that Wycliffe (even to this day ) is given much less mention compared to those who brought forth what is known as the King James Bible.
