He runs a considerable distance towards another dog, but the moment he hears my whistle recall cue he disengages instantly, turns his focus back to me, drops into a down, and then recalls cleanly to wait for release.
The down wasn’t asked for — it’s simply the behaviour he predicted would be most likely to be reinforced based on our recent training. That detail is largely irrelevant. What matters is this: the whistle recall cut through the distraction immediately, Truman disengaged from the other dog, and chose me over a competing stimulus.
This is what a functional recall actually looks like — not shouting, chasing, or relying on luck — but a dog that can be off lead, responsive, and under control around other dogs and people. It’s recall built for the real world, not a sterile training field.
