All things in dementia care are not equal. As many advocates who support emotion-focused models of dementia care know too well. Those living in Ontario’s north face more resource inequity, higher rates of chronic illness, and an older population; all factors that contribute to the north’s higher rates of dementia when compared to the rest of the province. Those looking for access to quality long-term care to support them to live well with dementia also face higher wait times in the north causing people to be more advanced in their illness by the time they access long-term care. The north also supports unique communities not found throughout the rest of the province such as the Francophone community and the First Nations Community.
At Temiskaming Lodge, through their person-centred focus, and the adoption of the Butterfly™ Approach to Dementia Care, they can support people with dementia to live well, despite the obstacles faced by those living in the north. They are leveling the playing field!
