Tenby’s history stretches back to at least the Iron Age, evidenced by prehistoric remains found in the surrounding areas. The town’s natural geography – a rocky headland sheltered by cliffs – made it an attractive defensive location for early settlers. Later, during the Roman era, the area wasn’t a major center like Caerleon or Carmarthen, but its coastal location meant it was likely known to Roman traders or military scouts.
The Welsh name for Tenby is Dinbych-y-Pysgod, meaning Little Fort of the Fish. This hints at its early role as both a defensive settlement (Dinbych means 'little fort') and a fishing hub.
