My musical series dedicated to Chopin's Waltzes op.64 comes to end with the third (and last) Waltz. Less known than the two previous works of op.64, the Waltz in A-flat major stands out significantly from a musical point of view. The piece bears the indication Moderato and begins with a melody that may seem agile and lively, but which almost immediately takes on the characteristics of very intimate and nostalgic music: the first part presents a single motif, a little melancholic and anxious, which is repeated with an identical pattern, but first in F minor, then in B flat major and then in G flat major. The continuous changes in modulation together with the passages of chromaticism are characteristic of Chopin's last compositional season and of his anguished and troubled spirit, tormented by regrets. The musical narration of the waltz, after having sought its precise identity, finally, with the Trio in the more serene key of C major, reaches a conclusion, even if subdued, which finally brings us back to the melody of the beginning. The long final coda concludes the piece, increasing in speed, first with an ascending scale and then with an arpeggio.
