The most recent development that points to a critical phase of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia is Ukraine’s receipt of French Mirage-2000 fighter jets.
These anti-aircraft guns aim to significantly increase Ukraine’s air defense and offensive capacity.
This aid, confirmed by French President Emmanuel Macron, marks a significant leap in the West’s military support for Kiev, while also deeply affecting the geopolitical and psychological dimensions of the conflict.
Thanks to the training they received in France, Ukrainian pilots will be able to effectively use fourth-generation multi-role fighter jets such as the Mirage-2000.
Advanced weapon systems, avionics equipment and high-precision munitions such as SCALP-EG/Storm Shadow cruise missiles allow Ukraine to conduct more effective operations against Russian air and land elements.
On the other hand, Western aid to Ukraine was not limited to France. Sweden announced a huge military aid package worth over $1 billion in total; The UK has pledged to provide “more support than ever” to Ukraine by 2025. These collective efforts, which also include the US, are part of a broader strategy to strengthen Ukraine’s defence capacity over the long term.
Training programmes and logistical support are particularly important for the Ukrainian army to perform sustainably in the field.
International initiatives aimed at developing Ukraine’s own weapons production capabilities, known as the “Danish model”, are also being put into action. This model aims to mobilise frozen Russian assets and build defence industry infrastructure within Ukraine.
On the Russian side, air force losses and limited production capacity are striking.
While Ukraine claims that Russia has suffered significant losses in new-generation fighter jets such as the Su-30, Su-34 and Su-35, US and NATO commanders say that the Russian Air Force still retains most of its potential.
Nevertheless, it is often emphasized that Russia can only limit its aircraft procurement to around 20 new Su-30, Su-34 or Su-35 aircraft per year, and that it cannot compensate for its losses on the front line due to the rapid expiration of their service life.
Supporting Ukraine with additional Western fighter jets such as the F-16 has the potential to further undermine Russian air superiority.
As the war enters its third year, the “quick victory” scenario that Moscow initially expected has not come true. The advanced defense systems, tanks, drones and artillery support that arrived in Ukraine are slowing down the Russian advance while providing a morale advantage to the Ukrainian army.
In particular, the West’s modern weapons shipments are putting psychological pressure on Russian soldiers. It is also claimed that increasing sanctions are damaging the Russian economy and increasing political pressure on Vladimir Putin.
As a result, the military, financial and technological support that Ukraine receives from both Europe and the US is seriously affecting the course of the conflict.
The deployment of Mirage-2000s in Ukraine demonstrates the symbolic and strategic importance of the Western aid to Kiev.
The record-breaking aid packages put in place by Sweden, England, France and other allies are increasing Ukraine’s defense capacity while limiting Russia’s military moves and air superiority.
These developments present a multidimensional picture that could pave the way for diplomatic solutions as well as more violent confrontations in the future stages of the war.
