Brief information:
Bishkek is the capital and largest city of Kyrgyzstan, a city of national significance, and the administrative center of the Chui Region.
It is located in the Chui Valley in northern Kyrgyzstan, several dozen kilometers from the border with Kazakhstan.
It is located at an altitude of approximately 800 meters above sea level, at the confluence of the Chu, Alamedin, and Kara-Archa rivers.
The city began as a fortification of the Kokand Khanate in 1825, receiving the name Pishpek. During the Soviet period, it was renamed Frunze, and with independence in 1991, it received its historical name, Bishkek.
Bishkek is the political and administrative center of the Kyrgyz Republic, home to the residences of the president, government, and parliament.
Large industrial enterprises, universities, and cultural institutions, including museums, theaters, parks, and research institutes, are located here. Bishkek is an important economic hub for the country, with developed mechanical, textile, food, and engineering industries.
The city connects the country to the outside world: Manas International Airport provides air links to Europe, Asia, and other regions.
Bishkek is often called the gateway to Kyrgyzstan, as it is the starting point for trips to the mountains, lakes, and natural and historical sites of the country.
As of January 1, 2025, the population of Bishkek was 1,321,900.
