Mathe versus Groove

Ein berühmtes Experiment stellt Mensch und Computer die Aufgabe, einen Rucksack mit verschieden grossen Schachteln möglichst effizient zu packen. Hier soll der Mensch bis heute besser abschneiden. Man vermutet, dass er sich ein Bild der Lage machen kann, statt alle Kombinationen durchrechnen zu müssen, wie der Algorithmus es tut.
Wer von Kombinatorik spricht, rührt an den Kern des modernen Schlagzeugspiels. Auf Polyrhythmik ausgelegt, soll es Muster überlagern, ohne bloss virtuose Permutationen vorzuführen. Zu jedem Grundbeat gibt es eine potentiell unendliche Zahl an Erweiterungen, Fill-ins und Verzierungen. Doch welche macht musikalisch Sinn? – Eine Frage von Stil und Intuition.
Amir Bresler scheint über einem ersten Puls zunächst verschiedene mögliche Überlagerungen ›vorzuschlagen‹, die stets an die gewählte Klangwelt geknüpft sind. Diese Intros hören sich an wie didaktische Vorreden, bevor es mit der Mathe der Polyrhythmik richtig zur Sache geht.
Aus jedem Groove, der sich auf diese Weise entwickelt, kehrt der Musiker wieder zum Spiel mit den einzelnen ›Registern‹ des Drum Set zurück. Dieses Inside-Out ist höchst abwechslungsreich und fächert kaleidoskopisch ein grosses Klangarsenal auf, bis hin zu Komplexitäten, die das ungeschulte Hirn nur noch intuitiv versteht.
Doch Bresler behält die Übersicht. Bei aller Vielschichtigkeit seiner Patterns klingt das Drum Set doch stets wie ein Instrument – Mathematik versus Empfindung also auch hier. Eines steht fest: In Sachen Ästhetik würde Bresler auch gegen einen Deep Blue des Drumming gewinnen – obwohl der Weltmeister Garry Kasparow gegen den gleichnamigen ersten Tyrannosaurus der Schachcomputer 1997 den Kürzeren zog.

Maths versus groove

A famous experiment sets humans and computers the task of packing a backpack with differently sized boxes as efficiently as possible. To this day, humans are said to perform better in this task. Humans are assumed to create a mental image instead of having to calculate all the combinations, as the algorithm does.
Whoever speaks of combinatorics touches the core of modern drumming. Designed for polyrhythm, it is meant to superimpose patterns without merely performing virtuoso permutations. For every basic beat, there is a potentially infinite number of extensions, fill-ins and embellishments. But which one makes sense musically? – This is a question of style and intuition.
Over a first pulse, Amir Bresler gradually seems to 'propose' various possible superimpositions always related to the chosen soundscape. These intros sound like didactic prefaces to the serious business of polyrhythmic math he then gets down to.
From each groove developed in this way, the musician returns to playing with the individual “registers” of the drum set. This inside-out is highly varied and kaleidoscopically fans out a wide array of sounds, up to complexities that the untrained brain can only understand intuitively.
Yet, Bresler keeps the overview. For all the complexity of his patterns, the drum set always sounds like one instrument - mathematics versus feeling is at play here again. One thing is certain: in terms of aesthetics, Bresler would also win against a Deep Blue of drumming – even though the world champion Garry Kasparov lost out to the eponymous first tyrannosaurus of chess computers in 1997.
