Norma and I have known each other for 15 years. My first visit to Guarneri House in Grand Rapids Michigan, is where we met. I was trying out basses in the shop, and when I got to Norma, it was love at first sight. However, when Steve Riley, then owner of Guarneri House, told me the price, I knew it wouldn’t work out. We parted ways and that was it. After being principal of the Grand Rapids Symphony for about two years, a woman named Edith Blodgett made a very generous donation to the orchestra which was set up to help musicians in the orchestra purchase instruments that were out of their price range. The orchestra knew I was looking for a new instrument, so with the help of that fund, I was able to work out a financial arrangement which allowed me to purchase Norma. I began playing Norma in the winter of 2006, and the purchase and paperwork were finalized in April of 2007, so we have been together for 13 and a half years. We will remain together for the rest of my career.
