In 1980, sculptor/illustrator Walter Einsel (my grandfather) was commissioned to design this large-scale kinetic display to showcase the benefits of soon-to-be-realized technological advances like personal computers, smart telephones, voicemail and internet.
The accompanying song - which has played on and off in my head for decades - was written by Thomas Tierney. I have wondered about this song for a long time! I was very happy to receive this message from Thomas:
"How great to see this! In 1982 I was asked by AT&T to write this song "Bringing the World Closer to You" for EPCOT's FutureCom exhibit to accompany the folk sculptor "Age of Information" wall by Walter Einsel. The song played 144 times a day for ten years and featured all the new communication innovations to com."
