Note: This playthrough uses a relatively recently discovered patch, which disables the auto lock-on system that normally locks the player onto the first enemy they hit with a normal attack, making it impossible to turn afterwards. (see here    • Dynasty Warriors Disabled Auto-Lock Patch ...  )

Wei Yan has a bunch of hops in his attacks which isn't the best, but he can get by with just normal attacks, C6, and maybe an occasional C4 to throw a crowd back. With the unique weapon, for very obvious reasons C5 becomes the strongest attack, because of its death element. The last hit of C6 gets the element as well, but it takes longer to get to it without being interrupted.
You can spin the last normal attack to improve the range a little bit thanks to the patch.
C6 is a multi-hit attack - it doesn't do that much damage but the second-to-last hit lifts the enemy up again, at which point you can stop and restart the combo. It is quite useful for racking up combo counts.
The Musou Attack is a bit awkward to aim and doesn't hit that often, what with the whole breakdancing thing he has going on, so it's more an escape measure than a main part of offense.


The unique weapon is at Jie Ting. Some sites will tell you to defeat all officers including sub-officers, but the actual requirement is just defeating Zhang He, Zhenji (replaced by Dian Wei here), and entering Sima Yi's camp. I do defeat everyone, but it's not required for the weapon. The weapon box then spawns on the mountain in the east.

Also, there is a way to prevent Ma Su disobeying orders and getting ambushed. If you defeat Sun Li in under 2 minutes, Ma Su will not advance up the mountain - Zhang He will advance instead, and the would-be ambush unit spawns on top with no morale loss from being ambushed.

The unique weapon has Jump / Attack / Defense / Attack Range and a Death Element on C5 and the last hit of C6.
The death element especially makes quick work of enemies in the last stage.
