Many of our favorite cold hardy succulents, namely sempervivum houseleeks--also known as hens & chicks--and sedum stonecrops, come from the Alps. Join me for a concert of cicadas and a stroll in the foothills of the Alps, in Provence, in search of native succulents in their own habitat.
We'll see pale stonecrop (Sedum sediforme), goldmoss stonecrop (Sedum acre) and Sempervivum tectorum, the common houseleek, growing in fields of lavender, rocky crevices, or beneath wild boxwoods, under varied but specific conditions. We'll also encounter other typical Mediterranean plants like wild thyme or the wild Euphorbia characia, the Mediterranean spurge, as well as a naturalized form of juneberry, Amelanchier Lamarckii, not to mention animals like the griffon vulture and the cicada, the symbol of Provence.Next time we'll look at how all this applies to a succulent drystone wall, so don't miss it!
