How to Grow Aerial Roots on Ficus Rumphii | Easy Method for Bonsai & Garden Trees

Today I’ll show you how to grow aerial roots on Ficus Rumphii, also known as Kaim tree in India. If you want that majestic banyan-style look in your bonsai or garden ficus, this is for you!”

What Are Aerial Roots?
“Aerial roots are roots that grow from the branches and trunk above the ground.”
“They help the plant anchor itself and absorb moisture from the air, especially in humid climates.”
“Ficus Rumphii is a tropical tree and loves humidity — perfect for aerial root development.”

Best Time & Conditions
Ideal time: Monsoon season (June–September)
Humidity: Above 70% is ideal
Temperature: 25–35°C
Location: Shady, semi-humid, or covered with plastic for greenhouse effect

Step-by-Step Method
✅ Method 1: Piping Technique

1. Buy few "Straw".
2. Fill those Straw with Vermi Compost and wet them with water.
3. Then use that Straw where you can see the Arial roots are growing.
4. Keep spraying water every 2 days to maintain humidity inside the Straw.

✅ Method 2: Moss Wrap Technique

1. Select a healthy branch or trunk where you want the aerial root.
2. Wrap moist sphagnum moss around that area.
3. Cover the moss with plastic wrap or cling film to trap moisture.
4. Keep spraying water every 2–3 days to maintain humidity inside the wrap.
5. In 2–3 weeks, you’ll see tiny roots start emerging.

✅ Method 3: Water Bottle Chamber

1. Take a small plastic bottle, cut the bottom.
2. Place it upside down on the branch, and fill with moss inside.
3. It acts like a mini humidity chamber.
4. Mist it often to keep humidity high.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Do not expose the moss wrap to direct sun — it will dry out.
Do not let the moss dry completely.
Avoid using cold water; lukewarm is better for root stimulation.
Don’t use fertilizer during the aerial root formation phase.

Aftercare & Training Tips
Once roots are long enough (4–5 inches), guide them down to the soil or a slab.
Tie gently using jute thread or clips.
If needed, use root hormone powder but it's optional for ficus.
Keep humidity high using mist or covering the plant with a transparent plastic sheet for a few hours daily.
