The history of St Laurence Church in Hawkhurst includes its origins around 1100, with the oldest parts being the chancel and north chapel from around 1350. A major rebuilding occurred around 1450, adding the nave, aisles, and tower, while a flying bomb damaged the church in 1944, leading to a restoration project that completed in 1957. The church is a Grade I listed building and was the first parish church in England to have communion rails, installed in 1574.
Early history and medieval construction
A church likely stood on the site as early as 1100.
The first mention of the church is in a charter from 1285, and the first recorded rector was Richard de Clyne in 1291.
The chancel and north chapel are the oldest parts of the building.
The Great East Window was built around 1350.
Most of the church took its current appearance around 1450, with the nave lengthened, the tower added, and the aisles and porches constructed.
