Frits van Oudtshoorn is a leading authority on southern African grasses and veld management. He grew up on a farm in Limpopo, completed a Master’s degree in Nature Conservation (specialising in ecological restoration), and has since dedicated his career to advancing sustainable rangeland practices. He lectures in rangeland management and pasture production at the University of Pretoria, is a facilitator with Africa Land-Use Training, and runs his own consultancy, Working on Grass.
He is widely known as the author of Guide to Grasses of Southern Africa and Veld Management – Principles and Practices, both regarded as definitive references for practitioners and students alike. At LaRSSA’s 2024 conference, Frits presented findings from a five-year research project conducted on Danie Slabbert’s farm in the eastern Free State—also the site of the 2025 Regenerative Agriculture Conference. This long-term study demonstrated how Ultra-High-Density Grazing (UHDG) can significantly improve botanical diversity, grass biomass, soil water infiltration, and overall rangeland productivity.
Through his research, teaching, and consulting, Frits continues to inspire and equip land managers, farmers, and conservationists to regenerate grasslands by working with natural ecological processes.
