KANAZAWA, Japan Walking Tour 4K

Hello friends! Today, we are in the historic, cultural and foodie center that is Kanazawa. Kanazawa is in the Ishikawa prefecture and is a short 2.5 hr via Shinkansen from Tokyo. We loved this city and highly recommend a visit!

Kanazawa has a rich history that defines what it is today. During the peaceful Edo Period (1603-1868), the powerful Maeda clan ruled the Kaga domain from Kanazawa. The Maeda clan's power and wealth were second only to the Tokugawa Shogunate. To demonstrate that they were not a political threat to the Shogun, the Maeda lords became patrons of academics and culture. They invited prominent scholars and master artisans from around Japan into their domain, and established cultural arts such as tea ceremonies and Noh theater in the area. This cultural abundance exposed not only the upper-class samurai, but also the people of Kanazawa to a level of culture rarely seen in other parts of Japan. The elements of this cultural uplifting are still evident today in the myriad of arts and crafts produced in the city and the general population's love for cultural activities and performing arts.

Kanazawa means "gold marsh". Today, the city produces 99% of Japan's production of gold leaf. Gold leaf are applied to decorative items in shrines and temples. Gold leaf covered items are abundant and make great souvenirs. Gold leaf ice cream, anyone?

Kanazawa is situated between the mountains and the sea. Try the fresh seafood that comes from the port of Kanazawa + the tender Noto beef- the local Ishikawa brand of Wagyu beef. We enjoyed the local conveyor belt restaurant called Sushi Kuine.
