In September of 2021, I began recording The Art Spirit, by Robert Henri. There are other audio versions of The Art Spirit already available. However, I felt the need to do my own version. Why? Some readings are dry and academic. Other performances miss the mark of the kind of man and teacher Henri was - they erroneously give Henri a condescending tone and voice. Robert Henri was anything but condescending. He had a deep love of people, and his students adored him. I can’t imagine Henri’s voice having a tone of arrogance and condescension about it at all! That is why I felt The need to do my own version of this seminal book. Hopefully, the voice I use is more in character with Henri’s intent.

There are 17 audio “chapters” – each about 30 to 40 minutes long totaling almost 9 hours of audio. Each recording is more than a simple reading of the text of beautifully written books about art and painting – each reading is a performance. I combine voice with music and sound to create a sonic experience. The sonic interludes provide a mental resting place that allows you to quietly process and meditate on what you have heard.

Please note that the original text for The Art Spirit was not organized into chapters. I have added the notion of chapters to make it easier for you to quickly find and go to the section of the book you want to read and listen to.

While the original text of Robert Henri's book is now in the public domain, please note that this performance, this video, is not. I do hope you enjoy my interpretation of this beautiful and inspiring text.
