In June 1944, thousands of Allied soldiers stormed the beaches of Normandy with the promise of liberating Europe. But for some of the prisoners captured in the chaos of the landing, the future was an immediate death sentence. Units of the 12th SS Panzer Division Hitlerjugend, partly composed of members of the Hitler Youth, received orders to summarily execute captured Allied soldiers—no transfer, no trial, just shootings within minutes. It cast a terrible shadow over D-Day: what was meant to be the first step toward freedom became, for many, a march to death. This documentary investigates why prisoners in Normandy were executed without trial, what responsibility German commanders assumed, and how these crimes forever marked the memory of the Allied campaign.
