No open tunings or setting up your guitar, just straight into it with actionable slide guitar techniques you can use right now. Some of us might struggle with rattling strings or messy slide tone when we first start, but in 5 minutes, JD gives you a step-by-step slide lesson that actually works, especially for beginners and those who just want to get better at slide guitar.

JD Simo and Gibson Gear Guide host Dinesh Lekhraj show us that flashy tricks aren’t where it’s at. It’s more about consistency and practicing the one lick over and over again so you can apply it to different strings.

JD’s top tips for learning how to play slide guitar from this clip:

“Pick something and don’t change it.” Whether it’s brass, glass, or metal—your slide choice is like a weight at the gym: consistency builds control.

“Start with the G and D strings.” They’re the easiest strings to sound clean on–master these first.

“Try and play what your fingers are doing.” Matching your slide phrasing to the way you actually play guitar.

“I cup the pick when I play.” JD shows how his right-hand finger placement dampens unwanted string noise without needing to mute with both hands.

“It’s like riding a bike.” Slide control takes time, especially the high E string, but you’ll get there.
