Wuppertal is a post-industrial city in western Germany, known for one of the strangest transport systems in the world: the Schwebebahn, a suspended railway running above the Wupper River.
This short film explores how infrastructure, migration, and urban regeneration reshaped a city that refused to collapse.
Built in 1901, the Wuppertal Schwebebahn still carries people to work every day.
But the story of Wuppertal is not just about a train — it’s about how a dense industrial city adapted after deindustrialization through reused infrastructure, civic initiatives like Utopiastadt, and projects such as the Nordbahntrasse.
This video shows Wuppertal from above, from inside the Schwebebahn, and from the streets below — telling a story of pragmatic urban transformation rather than glossy megaprojects.
