I went on a trip out of state and saw this Conn bass saxophone at a music store and indicated to the owner that I was interested in it. He made me a great deal and I had it shipped home. No case, no mouthpiece or other accessories, just the saxophone and neck, ready for a new life. In a future video, I will discuss it's age and the "HP" vs "LP" distinctions on vintage Conn and other saxophones.
If you saw my video about the Selmer Mark VI tenor, I outlined several different jobs that can be done when repairing vintage instruments. I plan to perform on this bass sax something between an overhaul and a restoration. I will need to fabricate a few new replica parts and do a major amount of tone hole soldering in addition to all of the normal overhaul work, and if ambition takes hold there is even some gold plating to do to the bell if I really want to call it a true and complete "restoration" - but, at the time of uploading this I haven't decided on that part yet as there is substantial additional $$ involved there for purely cosmetics.
Subscribe to the channel and follow along for periodic updates on this horn! It is exciting to be in the presence of one of these, as there are not many out there. I anticipate that there will be at least ten or more videos just about this instrument, in due time, so stay tuned. Thanks for watching! Leave a comment down below and tell me about your experience with bass saxes, or any interesting and rare instruments.
