Few artists have had a more ascendant year than Auckland, NZ’s BENEE. Her indie-pop gem “Supalonely,” with Gus Dapperton, #blewuponTikTok like no other, then crossed over to, well, everywhere. “It’s quite surreal, this whole thing,” BENEE, pronounced “Benny,” says with her perpetually glowing grin. Inauspicious happenstance- you know, a pandemic - bonds the platinum hit’s title to the entire 2020 mood. Maybe that’s what struck a nerve with all of us; Or maybe Stella Bennett was simply a star waiting to go supernova. Early jams from the “FIRE ON MARZZ” EP, like “Soaked” and “Glitter,” were just that: straight up jams. From a songwriting standpoint, funky basslines and buoyant weirdness are the kiwi’s bread ‘n’ vegemite. She’s branched out this year too - look to the Kenny Beats spooky-hop collab “Night Garden.” All that to say: this DSCVR at Home performance of new single “Snail” is sumpin' special. With her bandmate Tia handling the syncopated synths and wacky samples, BENEE dances around a treehouse overlooking her scenic hometown. Many months removed from touring, their happy chemistry remains infectious - you’ll be singing along in no time.
