While studying ions in your chemistry textbook, you’ll come across two kinds of ions - anions and cations.
Let’s learn about the main differences between the two types of ions:-
Anion is an atom or a group of the atom that bears one or more negative electric charges, whereas cation bears positive electric charges.
Organic anions are termed as carbanions, and organic cations are carbocations.
Anions are formed from non-metal atoms, and cations are formed from metal atoms.
Anions are attracted to the positive terminal (cathode), and cations are attracted to the negative terminal.
Some examples of anions are SO4—, Cl–, F–, PO4—and I– and examples of cations are Na+, K+, NH4+, Ca2+, and Al3+.
