Pruning in action #3. Stopham Vineyard March 6th

Pruning. During the winter season when all plants lie in dormancy and we spend more hours inside keeping warm, waiting for longer days and warmer weather. I on the other hand go out and prune my vines. This is the best time of the year to prune vines and prepare them for the next season’s growth.

Pruning is a fundamental process for vines as it enhances fruit production and reduces the canopy to a manageable level. Thus, enhancing sun exposure and wind throughout the plant, keeping it healthy and dry. During the summer period vines can grow at an exceptional rate and as they are planted close together this can create a very dense canopy and reduce airflow. Which in turn can make the microclimate of the vine very hot and humid, making the fruit susceptible to diseases such as botrytis and down mildew.
