If your newborn seems abnormally stiff, it may be no big deal. It could resolve very quickly or, as a parent, you could be seeing problems that just are not there. But it could also be a sign of a birth injury.
Hypertonia is the medical term for abnormal muscle stiffness or rigidity in the muscles of the body. It is defined as increased resistance to passive stretch. Hypertonia in babies, also known as increased muscle tone, is a condition in which a baby's muscles are abnormally stiff or rigid. This stiffness can make it difficult for the baby to move or maintain their position, and can affect their ability to perform everyday activities like feeding, crawling, or sitting up.
Hypertonia can interfere with positioning, and contribute to the formation of contractures and musculoskeletal deformities. Maddeningly, it also causes physical pain for some children.
CAUSES
Hypertonia can be caused by a number of factors, including genetic disorders, brain injuries, and cerebral palsy. It may also be a symptom of other underlying medical conditions, such as hypothyroidism, spinal muscular atrophy, or muscular dystrophy.
SYMPTOMS
Symptoms of hypertonia in babies may include increased muscle tone, difficulty moving, difficulty maintaining position, and abnormal reflexes. Hypertonia can also make it difficult for the baby to communicate, as they may be unable to make certain facial expressions or vocalizations.
TREATMENT
Treatment for hypertonia in babies typically involves physical therapy, which may include exercises to improve muscle strength and flexibility, as well as techniques to improve balance and coordination. In some cases, medication may be used to manage symptoms.
Early diagnosis and intervention are important for managing hypertonia in babies, as early treatment can help improve long-term outcomes and prevent complications. If you are concerned about your baby's muscle tone or development, it is important to speak with your pediatrician or a qualified healthcare professional.
