Today we mostly fished at one of the most notorious fishing spots in singapore, the Raffles lighthouse, almost every boat fishing anglers know this spot, landing their biggest fishes or losing their minds after loosing multiple number of fishes. Raffles lighthouse is known as the pelagic playground, housing a variety of pelagic species such as the Longfin trevally, Longrakered Trevally, diamond trevally & even the huge giant trevallies. We were after the big sagai (Longfin trevally Longrakered Trevally) & we did landed a few but kept getting taxed by the black tip sharks or even other bigger sharks. My leaders were consistently having the sandy textures upon snapping, indicating shark skinned creature eating my initial fishes i lured on my jig. It was one of the most humbling & mind breaking day for me. We also boarded K8 Conquest II Kevin's new boat after a long time & we were welcomed with many longfin trevally on his boat!

Fun fact: Shark skin is uniquely adapted for speed & efficiency in the water, thanks to tiny, flat, V-shaped scales called dermal denticles. Unlike the smooth scales of most fish, dermal denticles are structurally similar to teeth, composed of dentine & enamel. These denticles are tough, overlapping like roof shingles, & serve several key functions that enhance a shark’s survival. The rough texture of their skin also creates a surface that resists colonization by parasites & algae, helping keep the shark's skin clean. In essence, shark skin is an evolutionary marvel—a suit of armor & a hydrodynamic aid rolled into one, giving sharks a powerful edge in the marine environment.

Blacktip reef sharks (Carcharhinus melanopterus) are the native & one of the most common sharks that guard the reef, they are carnivorous & voracious & are commonly found in shallow reefs & lagoons. These sharks are identifiable by the distinct black tips on their fins & typically grow up to 1.6 meters in length. They are generally timid & pose little threat to humans, feeding mainly on small fish and invertebrates .

Despite their presence in local waters, blacktip reef sharks are classified as "Vulnerable" globally by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and are considered endangered in Singapore. Their populations are declining due to threats such as overfishing, habitat degradation, and entanglement in fishing gear. Incidents have been reported where multiple sharks were found dead in gill nets around Pulau Semakau and Pulau Hantu .

Conservation efforts in Singapore include restrictions on net fishing in areas managed by the National Parks Board (NParks), such as Sisters’ Islands Marine Park. NParks also promotes sustainable fishing practices, encouraging the use of hook-and-line methods and catch-and-release techniques .Occasional sightings of blacktip reef sharks, like the one at Sentosa’s Palawan Beach in September 2024, highlight the importance of ongoing conservation efforts to protect these native marine species

The lighthouse is located at the southernmost tip of Singapore, on Pulau Satumu, & is surrounded by some of the country’s most untouched and biodiverse coral reefs. With over 150 coral species across more than 50 genera, the island is a true marine haven, showcasing stunning hard corals like staghorn and table corals

The intertidal zones are teeming with life—from pizza anemones hosting tiny shrimps to feather stars, sea cucumbers, giant clams, and even mating octopuses

Beneath the surface, divers encounter a vibrant reef community: fusiliers, damselfish, clownfish, groupers, nudibranchs, pygmy cuttlefish, and the occasional nurse shark. Pulau Satumu is also one of the few places in Singapore where you can witness mass coral spawning under the full moon.

Thanks to its remote location, restricted public access, and strong tidal currents, the reefs here are better protected from sedimentation and pollution—making Pulau Satumu a vital “source reef” for regional marine life. However, this fragile ecosystem still faces threats such as coral bleaching, overfishing, and ship groundings.

Practicing sustainable fishing such as releasing juvenile fish & using tungsten jigs instead of lead ones can significantly reduce environmental harm and help protect this precious marine habitat.
