GBV is a form of violence directed at individuals due to their gender, causing physical, sexual, or psychological harm. It represents a critical public health issue and a grave human rights violation, demanding multi-level interventions.

GBV encompasses sexual, physical, mental, and economic harm, occurring both publicly and privately. It includes threats, coercion, and manipulation and manifests in various ways, including intimate partner violence, sexual assault, forced and early marriage, dowry harassment, acid attacks, 'witch hunting,' and 'honour' crimes. Rooted in gender inequality, power abuse, and discriminatory norms, GBV affects all socio-economic groups and spans all life stages.

Globally, 30% of women have faced intimate partner violence, and 7% have suffered sexual violence. In India, the NFHS-5 reports that 32% of women aged 18-49 have experienced spousal violence. The culture of silence around GBV exacerbates the issue, enabling the continuation of violence.
