Pop-up Tulip tutorial and template
In this tutorial we are going to make a pop-up tulip. Strong but elegant using one of my favorte pilar mechanisms.
Free template PDF download link: https://www.paperpaul.com/templates/t...
The template file contains four pages. You don;t need to print out page 1. Page 2 is the tulip's flower head, page 3 the stem and page 4 is for the cover.
Note: I mention an extra sheet of heavy paper for a double cover. I really recommend to do this so the card is strong and protects the parts inside. I forgot to do this at the end, but it’s really straight forward: cut the sheet in half and glue each half on the cover of the pop-up card. Open the card and cut off any paper that sticks out and your card is finished.

Getting started
To make this pop-up and use this template, you will need the tutorial video that is available on my PaperPaul YouTube channel. Make sure to watch that first before you get started.
Materials
• 4 sheets of +/- 200gms / 80lb cardstock
• Double-sided tape (recommended) or glue
• Self healing cutting mat (recommended)
• 1 sheet of 300gms / 110lb cardstock for double cover
Tools
• Laser or inkjet printer
• Knife (X-acto and/or snap-off blade)
• Ruler for cutting and scoring
• Scoring tool (scoring pen)
• Folding bone (recommended)
Work precise!
Making this pop-up is not really hard but it is important to work very precise.
Tip: For best results use a ruler, a knife and a scoring tool.
Printer set-up
It’s important to print all pages at 100% scale. Some printers automatically scale down the page so it fits inside the printable area. When you print the template PDF file, check and make sure that the option for scaling is turned off! For the best result, choose the highest print quality available.
Using colored paper
You can use the printed template to “double cut” the shapes out of colored paper. This way you prevent visible glue and cutting marks on your work. Make sure to mark the positions of the folding lines very precisely!
Scoring lines for folds
There are many tools that you can use for scoring precise folding lines. Like a scoring pen, empty pen, or the back of a dining knife.
Scissors or a knife?
I recommend to use a knife because that way you can work really precise without damaging the paper. If you decide to use a knife, make sure to start your project with a new sharp blade. But also, be careful!
Glue or tape?
Both will work for this project. I like to work withdouble-sided tape because it’s fast and clean. When you work with glue, make sure to take the time it needs for the glue to dry.
