This video essay is an attempt to illustrate and explain Robert Bresson’s concept of cinematography, or, as described by Jonathan Griffin in his translation of Bresson’s book Notes On Cinematography, what he believed was ‘creative filmmaking which thoroughly exploits the nature of film as such’ (1977: 2). The video essay therefore draws on Bresson’s writings on montage, models, rhythm, image, sound, economy, mechanism and cinematography. It uses Michael Haneke’s film, The Seventh Continent (1989), which, I believe, is almost a paradigm for Bresson’s concepts.
