“A Taste of Honey” was written by songwriters Bobby Scott and Ric Marlow. Originally written for the 1960 Broadway version of the 1958 British play “A Taste of Honey,” later the 1961 film of the same name, the recording by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass was the most popular instrumental version. From the 1965 Herb Alpert’s Tijuana Brass album “Whipped Cream & Other Delights,” the song reached No. 1 at the top of the Easy Listening chart.
Other recordings of “A Taste of Honey” include vocal versions by Lenny Welch, Billy Dee Williams, Esther Ofarim, Bobby Scott, The Beatles, Barbra Streisand, The Supremes & Four Tops, Tony Bennett, and Bobby Darin, among others. Musically, the song’s introduction has eight repeated beats to set the faster tempo. These beats were originally intended as an editing cue, but Alpert left them in the song. Pianist Charles Manning also uses those introductory beats as he improvises the hit song “A Taste of Honey.”
