After nearly five years, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) arrested a 30-year-old man from Virginia in connection with pipe bombs placed in Washington on the eve of the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi announced on Thursday.
"Early this morning, Brian Cole Jr. was arrested charged with placing the pipe bombs at the RNC and the DNC on January 5, 2021," Bondi said during a news conference, adding that Cole was charged with violating 18 USC 844, which is the use of an explosive device. “This investigation is ongoing. As we speak, search warrants are being executed and there could be more charges to come.”
Live aerial video showed the FBI at the suspect's home on Thursday afternoon, with agents examining the trunk of a car nearby.
Bondi said the FBI made the arrest without any new tips or witnesses. She attributed the arrest to "good diligent police work and prosecutorial work" under the Trump administration.
"That evidence had been sitting there collecting dust," Bondi said, slamming the Biden administration and praising FBI Director Kash Patel and Dan Bongino, who is the current FBI deputy director.
Patel and Bongino, who were both at the news briefing, said they rebuilt the investigation from scratch by re-running every lead and re-testing all the evidence, as well as bringing in top experts, and deploying new technology to get the break they needed to nab the suspect.
