On March 6, 2014, Amber Smith called police, reporting that she had just come back to her Levering, Michigan home to find the door open, the place in disarray, and her fiancé Trent Mallory dead.

Police raced to the scene, where they found Trent's body in the couple's bedroom. He had been shot in his bed. Close to the body was a bullet casing from a .22 caliber rifle.
