Lago di Mergozzo, also known as Lake Mergozzo, is a charming sub-alpine lake located in northern Italy. Let me share some interesting details about this picturesque lake:
1. Geographical Location:
Lake Mergozzo lies just to the west of Lago Maggiore and north of Lago d'Orta.
It is situated at the mouth of the Val d'Ossola in the province of Verbano Cusio Ossola, which is part of the Piedmont region¹[3].
The lake is surrounded by beautiful mountain landscapes, making it a serene and tranquil spot.
2. Historical Significance:
In ancient times, Lake Mergozzo was the extreme point of the short northwestern arm of Lago Maggiore, formed by glaciation.
However, repeated flooding of Maggiore's tributary, the Toce, led to sediment deposition, gradually forming a stretch of land that cut off Mergozzo from the larger expanse of water and from the Toce itself.
Today, the settlement of Fondotoce (a frazione of Verbania) stands on this alluvial plain, while the small town of Mergozzo at the other end of the lake gives it its name.
3. Natural Features:
The greater part of the lake falls within the commune of Mergozzo, with the rest within Verbania.
Monte Orfano (790 m) rises from the southwest shore of the lake, and its limestone rocks are heavily quarried.
On the opposite side of the lake, the mountains form the beginning of the Corni di Nibbio chain, which divides the Val d'Ossola from the Valgrande and its National Park.
4. Water Quality and Ecology:
Lake Mergozzo is fed by several clean mountain streams, including the Rio Bracchio and the Rio Rescina.
Its sole outlet is a 2.7-kilometer canal that links it to Lago Maggiore near Fondotoce.
Despite the slight difference in water levels between the two lakes, Lake Mergozzo remains one of the least polluted in Italy.
Motorboat use has long been forbidden, contributing to its pristine condition.
Tourists, especially from Germany and the Netherlands, appreciate its crystal-clear waters and natural beauty¹[3].
5. Fish Species:
The lake hosts a variety of fish species, including pikeperch, common whitefish, brown trout, Arctic char, bleak, chub, Danube roach, common carp, rudd, tench, and more.
Its clean waters provide an ideal habitat for these aquatic creatures.
