The Bandit wargame is aimed at absolute beginners. It will teach the basics needed to be able to play other wargames. This game, like most other games, is organized in levels. You start at Level 0 and try to “beat” or “finish” it. Finishing a level results in information on how to start the next level. The pages on this website for “Level [X]” contain information on how to start level X from the previous level. E.g. The page for Level 1 has information on how to gain access from Level 0 to Level 1.

The OverTheWire Bandit wargame is designed to teach the basics of using the Unix/Linux command line through a series of challenges. From levels 0 to 10, players progressively learn to use essential commands and techniques necessary for navigating and manipulating the file system.
In Level 0, players learn to connect to the server using SSH with the command ssh. Level 1 teaches how to find and read a file with a specific name using ls and cat. In Level 2, players handle filenames with spaces, learning to use backslashes or quotes to manage such filenames.
Level 3 introduces hidden files, and players use ls -a to reveal them and cat to read the content. In Level 4, players identify human-readable files using the file command. Level 5 requires searching for files within directories and subdirectories using the find command, and then reading the content with cat.
In Level 6, players refine their search skills by using find to locate a file with specific properties (size and type), incorporating options to exclude executable files and using file and grep for further filtering. Level 7 focuses on searching file content with grep to find specific strings.
Level 8 involves identifying unique strings and sorting them with sort and uniq, while Level 9 emphasizes finding human-readable strings within binary files using strings and grep. Finally, Level 10 introduces base64 encoding, and players decode the data using the base64 command.
