John James Dufour starts the first commercial winery in America. A native of Switzerland, he comes to America with the intention of starting a winery. He succeeds first in Kentucky with First Vineyard. This vineyard gets sick and never fully recovers; it was abandoned in 1809. In 1801, he started another vineyard in what would become Vevay, Indiana. This vineyard succeeded and became the cornerstone of the American wine industry.
