(20 Jan 2022) LOUIS VUITTON PRESENTS FINAL COLLECTION OF LATE DESIGNER VIRGIL ABLOWH
On Thursday (20JAN.2022) afternoon, at the Carreau du Temple in Paris, Louis Vuitton revealed the eighth and final collection by menswear artistic director Virgil Abloh before his untimely death from cancer last November.
As the first Black artistic designer for a top French luxury fashion house, Abloh brought streetwear to the runway and served as an inspiration and a role model for other young dreamers. This Fall-Winter 2022 show served as a joyous homage to the groundbreaking creator, and was attended by everyone from LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault to supermodel Naomi Campbell, tennis star Venus Williams, and many others.
The set, or what he referred to as the "Louis Dreamhouse," contained a semi-submerged wood cabin with smoke coming out of the chimney, a king-sized bed, a trampoline for acrobats, and a long banquet table where the Chineke! Orchestra played music composed by rapper Tyler, the Creator.
Abloh loved to bring vibrant color to the catwalk. This collection featured black and white along with eye-popping shades of turquoise and purple, floral Gobelin tapestry, patchworks, tie dye, and monograms. Shapes included sculptural tailored jackets, bombers, leggings, jellabas, workwear, and wrap skirts. Footwear ranged from knee-high boots with cube heels to LV Trainers. Accessories included baseball caps with wedding veils, balaclavas, palladium ear cuffs, and angel wings. Of course, there was a huge assortment of bags, from surrealist, distorted Damier bags to paint buckets. Some models carried bouquets of flowers wrapped in fake newspaper like fish 'n' chips.
Among the models, dancers rolled on the catwalk, jumped between the trampoline and stairs, breakdanced in slow motion. At the end of the show, in lieu of Abloh's taking a bow, his creative team walked onto the runway, to an emotional round of applause.
