Tickets to Eat in Victorian London! (Who Feeds the Poor in Victorian England?)

You needed luck to get a food ticket in Victorian London! 19th Century slums were blighted by the hunger stricken. Alarmed by the sheer scale of destitution and vagrancy, William Booth established the Salvation Army in 1865 to 'release the poor from the curse of grinding poverty.' His mission was to provide soup, soap and salvation to 'down and outs', which he believed would turn people away from the darkest depths of deprivation. In these surroundings Jack London (an American journalist and social activist) journeyed to the East End disguised in working class clothes. He wanted to experience the struggles of everyday people for food and shelter for himself. In this video Jack London, after a night walking the streets, travels to the Salvation Army barracks on Blackfriars Road for a free meal - where he is accompanied by a multitude of wretched hungry and homeless men. He soon discovers that their breakfast is neither worth the arduous wait nor the cost of his liberty.
