Linguists and experts on writing systems generally agree with Herodotus's thesis that the alphabet was introduced to the Greeks by the Phoenicians. But who were those Phoenicians? Herodotus intertwines history with myth. A new theory, based on morphological and semantic analyses of the names of the eponymous and related heroes Cadmus, Phoenix, Agenor, Telephaassa, Cilix, Europa, and others involved in the myth, suggests that the Phoenicians were not a nation but rather a social class.
This presentation runs at two levels of difficulty. The narration is for the general public, while the visual material is for a knowledgeable audience and requires frequent pausing to read the supporting evidence. Curated English subtitles and automatic translations are available. Because of the linguistic nature of the content, watching with English subtitles is recommended, but translations may sometimes be ineffective. Οι γλωσσολόγοι και οι ειδικοί στα συστήματα γραφής συμφωνούν γενικά με τη θέση του Ηροδότου ότι το αλφάβητο εισήχθη στους Έλληνες από τους Φοίνικες. Αλλά ποιοι ήταν αυτοί οι Φοίνικες; Ο Ηρόδοτος συνυφαίνει την ιστορία με τον μύθο. Μια νέα θεωρία βασίζεται σε μορφολογικές και σημασιολογικές αναλύσεις των ονομάτων των επωνύμων και των συγγενών ηρώων: Κάδμος, Φοίνιξ, Ἀγήνωρ, Τηλέφασσα, Κίλιξ, Ευρώπη, και άλλων εμπλεκομένων στον μύθο, και υποδηλώνει ότι οι Φοίνικες δεν ήταν έθνος αλλά μάλλον κοινωνική τάξη.
