Chapter 6 includes one of my favorite stories and then one of the more “hard to understand” texts as well. In this chapter I will give a little more attempt at explanation of some of the verses. Like any ones explanations, read mine and see if they make the Bible make sense. Let me encourage you to see the Bible as the Final Authority and not my explanation of it. If a text seems “hard to understand” the best thing to do is read it, and the texts before and after it several times. The Bible talks about meditating on the scripture. That is nothing more than reading it over and over as you spend time thinking about its meaning. If you just can’t make sense of a verse don’t get discouraged. No one has made sense of 100% Bible. It is called growing in knowledge (2 Peter 3:18) and it takes time.
John Chapter 6
Bread to Satisfy 5000 & the Bread of life to Satisfy ALL
Verse 1-15 A Lad, His Loaf, and a Lunch is Provided.
1) Look in verse 2 …great multitude followed him ________________ they saw his ___________________..
Notice the need. Read verse 5-7 ……. (A bunch of hungry people, more than they could afford to feed)
2) Notice the Supplies Look in verse 9 There is a _________here, which hath __________
barley loaves, and _____________ small fishes: but what are they among so many?
3) Notice the miracle. Look in verse 11 And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the __________________, and the disciples to _th__________ that were set down; and likewise of the fishes _______ ____________ as they would.
I like to use the little boy as an example of what we can do. THINK ABOUT IT. Sometimes we may feel like we don’t have much to offer (like the lad with his lunch). We may think, “I don’t have enough for God to use”. The reality is, God takes the little things that we offer and can use them in great and mighty ways. IF we offer what we have to Him, God can use it.
Verse 16-25 Jesus is Late for the Boat and a Feast.
Just a thought. Jesus missed the boat and was late to the feast. At least that is what it seemed like to every one there. Jesus came along just when He was supposed to. Just because God does not act or re-act the way you think He should, does not mean God is not working, waiting and watching.
Verse 26-65 Jesus, the Bread of Life that can satisfy all IF you will partake.
4) Look in Verse 27 … not for the ___________ which perisheth, but for that _____________which endureth
(Just like chapter 4. Jesus teaches about meat comparing it to spiritual needs)
5) Look in verse 31 Our fathers did eat _____________ in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.
(This story can be found in Exodus 16:4-15, 35)
6) Look in verse 32 … Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my ___________________ giveth you the true bread from heaven.
(Jesus is reminding them that neither religion nor man ((Moses)) gave them the bread, God did)
7) Look in verse 35 ….. Jesus said unto them, I am the _________ of ____________: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
(Manna was given by God in the wilderness. Jesus is telling them, they ate and got hungry again BUT
Jesus was sent from heaven and would satisfy forever the spiritual hunger that every person has.)
8) Look in verse 41 The Jews then _______________________ at him,
(They began to be sarcastic and question Jesus. To doubt what He was saying)
9) Look in verse 53 …. Except ye _____________ the flesh of the Son of man, and __________ his blood…
• Consider, that Jesus had taught them in verses 31-52 and they scoffed and murmured at His teachings.
• Verse 50-51 Jesus said He was the bread that satisfies forever IF you will partake (accept Him)
• They began to mock (verse 52)
• REMEMBER, Jesus, the master teacher, teaches the spiritual with an example of the physical.
• Jesus is not telling them to LITERALLY eat his flesh, but emphatically telling them they must partake of Christ, that is, accept him.
• Hopefully this is very obvious to you. I try to help with this, because there are religions that teach cannibalism. They believe they are actually eating His flesh and drinking his blood. This is forbidden by God in the Bible. Genesis 9:4 Leviticus 17:10-14
• Read the verses until you see what God says in His Word. God bless you as you do.
Verse 66-71 The proper attitude when others quit following Jesus.
10) Look in verse 68 …to ______________ shall we __________? thou hast the words of eternal life.
Notice that Jesus knew what others were going to do. Verse 15 Verse 26 verse 43 verse 64 verse 70-71.
