We learned how to make biochar–by inoculating charcoal with microbes. We made charcoal by burning wood under high heat, low oxygen conditions and inoculated the biochar with worm castings.
We want to use biochar to fertilise trees, and with an abundance of old olive wood on our land, we thought this was the perfect win-win situation. Fertilising using biochar is a great way to kill 2 birds with 1 stone for us; disposing of lots of old prunings, and producing a carbon-rich fertiliser for our vegetable garden and trees.
Spring has definitely arrived on our off grid homestead in Spain and it's great to see our orchard coming back to life after a dormant Winter. Lots of jobs to be getting on with after some heavy rains and a good forecast ahead.

[ABOUT US]
We're Danny and Kate. In 2015 we moved from the UK to Barcelona, and after 8 years enjoying the busy city and sunny beaches we moved to the mountains to start a new adventure. We'll be renovating a town house, building an off grid cabin, restoring an old stone house and farming 12.5 acres of land with regenerative agriculture and permaculture practices in Catalunya, Spain.
