The IAAF World Championships travelled outside of Europe for the first time in its history, as the competition's third installment took place in Tokyo, Japan between 23 August and 1 September 1991.
The Japanese capital was picked ahead of bids from Berlin, Los Angeles and Perth by the IAAF council at their general meeting in Rome, in March 1987. Ahead of the Championships, Tokyo's National Olympic Stadium had a newly developed chipless polyurethane track, which was proven to be fast for sprinters, hurdlers and jumpers, though, it was less popular with distance runners.
Attracting a total attendance of 581,462 fans - thus exceeding that of Helsinki 1983 and Rome 1987, this edition of the World Athletics Championships is best-remembered for the long jump men's competition, when Carl Lewis made the best six-jump series in history, only to be beaten by compatriot and archrival Mike Powell, whose 8.95m jump broke Bob Beamon's long-standing world record set during the 1968 Mexico Olympics. Powell's benchmark still stands to this day.
Hassiba Boulmerka of Algeria is one of the main stars of the event, having outsprinted the Soviet Union's reigning titleholder Tetyana Dorovskikh in the women's 1,500m race to become the first African woman to win an athletics world title.
