Tree fern often comes with long twigs and large pieces. I remove them before adding any other ingredients to the mix.
For cuttings, I sometimes use perlite with a smaller particle size. It mixes well with tree fern.
Lechuza Pon can be a great substitution to perlite. I had several bags left and didn’t know what to do with leftover Pon. Mona from @Planttherapy1860 suggested mixing Pon into tree fern and using it for smaller cuttings. This Pon is pretty old— fertilizer beads have dried out, but some are still ok.
For larger pots, I add a mix of pumice and lava rock to the tree fern. I had leftover black and red lava rock, so I combined them.
Monto clay is another addition I make for Hoyas. It adds acidity to the soil. I've heard it is good for Hoyas. However, I don’t add clay to mixes for other plants, like Monsteras or Syngoniums.
Finally, I include zeolite in the mix. With all these ingredients combined, the result is essentially a DIY Pon, but with the addition of tree fern and clay. Sometimes, I also incorporate slow-release fertilizer.
All the particles, except the tree fern fiber, are similar in size, making the distribution of components even throughout the mix. After mixing well, I remove any remaining larger twigs. The final mix is incredibly airy yet retains a good amount of moisture. These proportions work best for my environment and watering habits.
Some examples in the video:
A tiny 1 oz cup with a Hoya cutting rooting in pure tree fern fiber.
A tall pot, which I prefer for most of my Lacunosas.
A 6" pot with pure tree fern for the large Multiflora—she’s always thirsty!
A 6" pot with a 50/50 mix, used for most plants.
This mix has been working great for me and the plants I care for and grow, and I hope it inspires you to experiment with your blends!
Happy growing!
