BIKE TRIP SENTRUPERT - PLETERJE - OTOCEC - DOLENJSKE TOPLICE

SENTRUPERT - THE LAND OF HAYRACKS is the first open-air museum with hayracks in the world. It has 19 drying devices exhibited, 17 of those are hayracks among which all types of hayracks in Slovenia are represented.

SENTJERNEJ - CARTHUSIAN MONASTERY - OPEN-AIR MUSEUM - The Pleterje Carthusian monastery is the only still functioning Carthusian monastery in Slovenia. Today 30 hectares of agricultural land belonging to the monastery are cultivated in a nature-friendly way.

Among the hard liquor produced here the most famous and special of them all is Pleterje pear hard liquor, because of the way they produce it. They attach a bottle to the branch of a pear tree and let the pear grow inside the bottle. When the pear ripens they rip the bottle with the pear inside of the branch and fill it with pear hard liquor.

THE OPEN-AIR MUSEUM is currently still located right next to the Pleterje monastery, but will move shortly to CASTLE KLEVEZ in SMARJESKE TOPLICE. Here we can find several old farm buildings typical for that area in the 19th century. They were transferred here from the surrounding villages. It is possible to see a typical farmhouse and the associated buildings, such as a toilet and a well. All the buildings except the fruit dryer are made of oak and beech wood and covered with straw. The central part of the house is a blach kitchen from 1833.

OTOCEC - Castle Otocec was first mentioned in 1252 and is the only water castle in Slovenia. Today the castle is a prestigious hotel that ranks at the very top of world quality.

DOLENJSKE TOPLICE - The Soteska mansion was once one of the most beautiful in that region. It has a renaissance park with a garden pavilion called The Devils Tower. It was designed in the shape of a clover and has the interior painted with baroque paintings. The pavilion got its unusual name as the lords of the castle organized joyful parties which gave the impression of sinfulness among the villagers.
