Why Kalpa is the HIDDEN Gem of Himachal Pradesh

Kalpa… a small Himalayan village tucked above Reckong Peo, surrounded by apple orchards, ancient wooden architecture, and the towering presence of the Kinner Kailash range.
People call it the hidden gem of Himachal Pradesh, but what actually makes Kalpa so special?
In this cinematic travel vlog, I set out to explore this tiny village and understand why so many travelers believe it captures the true soul of the mountains.

This episode takes you through the quiet monasteries, the old Kinnauri fort structures, the fierce and beautiful temples, and the everyday rhythm of a village that blends Hinduism and Vajrayana Buddhism in a way that feels almost seamless.
From the narrow lanes of Chini Gaon to the panoramic ridge where Kalpa opens up towards Spiti Valley — every corner of this place has a story, a symbol, and a history layered into the landscape.

We’ll visit the Hu-Bu-Lan-Kar Monastery, one of the oldest monastic sites in Kinnaur;
walk through the remains of the traditional Chini Killa / Kalpa Fort;
stand at the beautifully carved Chandika Devi (Kothi) Temple;
and explore the Narayan–Nagini temple complex shaped by the Chandela dynasty in the 15th century.
Along the way, we’ll also look at Kalpa’s past — when it was known as Chini Village, when it served as a tehsil headquarters, and when it briefly held the title of district headquarter before everything shifted down to Reckong Peo.

And speaking of Reckong Peo — the bustling base town right below Kalpa — we dive into how its name, its land, and its culture became the next chapter in Kinnaur’s evolving identity.
From here, travelers begin their journeys to Spiti Valley, making Kalpa the natural gateway to one of India’s most dramatic high-altitude deserts.
