In this video I break down a serious issue I ran into with the Hanna Salinity Tester, where it was reading saltwater far lower than actual, nearly causing a full tank crash. I explain what went wrong, how I caught it in time, and why blindly trusting test gear can be dangerous in a reef tank.
I also give a reef tank health update, showing how my corals responded to the sudden salinity swing. Some corals are recovering well, while others are still struggling from the stress — especially sensitive LPS and SPS.
To help with recovery, I’ve started dosing Reef Roids to assist with coral energy, colour, and tissue extension, particularly for corals showing signs of CVE / recession. I’ll share what I’m seeing so far and what I’ll be watching closely over the coming weeks.
Finally, I give an update on the roller mat install, which has been a very positive addition to the system so far — improving water clarity, reducing maintenance, and helping stabilise nutrients after the salinity incident.
If you’re running a reef tank, using digital testers, or considering a roller mat, this is a must-watch to avoid making the same mistake.
