Russ Ballard is an English guitarist, singer, songwriter and occasionally keyboardist. Along with Bob Henrit (see my interview from June 4th of last year), Russ began his musical journey as a member of The Roulettes backing Adam Faith. Russ and Bob then joined Unit 4+2 and played on the band’s big hit “Concrete and Clay”. Mr. Ballard’s next stop was Argent with Rod Argent where he was the lead singer and guitarist. And of course none other than Mr. Henrit would be the drummer. The band had a good run from 1969 to 1976, with Russ leaving in 1974. The band released 7 albums during the 70’s. Of course there would be reunions and reformations in the new millennium. After Argent, Russ began quite a prolific solo and songwriting career. Some of you may not recognize Russ Ballard’s name right off, but I guarantee you know his songs. Here’s just a few he’s written for other artists. “Liar” for both Argent and Three Dog Night, “So You Win Again” for Hot Chocolate, “Since You Been Gone” for Rainbow and Head East, “New York Groove” for British band Hello and Kiss’ Ace Frehley, “Winning” for Santana and “You Can Do Magic” for America. And let’s not forget Russ’ solo albums, all 10 of them including some 18 singles.
