If you struggle with crocheting an i-cord the traditional way, you can use two straight hooks to help you out. If you're also a knitter you can use DPNs or a circular needle, but if you only crochet all you need are two straight hooks!
Using two hooks will keep the stitches secure so you don't run the risk of dropping a stitch. Plus, using two hooks allows to keep consistent tension so that all your stitches will be nice an even.
