How bench start the type 1 VW air cooled engine.
Be sure to make sure everything is tight. I have started up a couple of engines and have forgotten to tighten some of the connections and the engine ran super rough. I then went through the engine once more to double look for loose or not connected parts. Often I have found that there was something loose on an engine when the engine was not running well. When those parts are tight then the engine ran a lot better than before.
Take your time. Remember to be patient
Do it right the first time.
