"This video describes the process of replacing the 6813A miter gear kit on Dutton-Lainson marine and ag jacks with weight capacities between 1,250 and 2,000 lbs, a 2-1/4" diameter outer tube, and manufactured after the 42nd week of 1996.

These parts are included in the kit: an upper miter gear, lower miter gear, shaft bushing, dowel pin, roll pin, flat washer, and a handle bushing.

Start by using a flat blade screwdriver to help remove your jack's top cap. Angle the jack's handle as much as setting a 3/16" punch on top of its roll pin will allow, then pound the pin out as far as you can. Forcibly crank the handle until the roll pin either breaks or becomes bent and is facing up. If it broke and there is still one piece inside of the handle, pound it out. If it is still one piece but bent, use a pair of needle nose pliers to pull it out of the handle hole. Next, use a hammer to help you remove the handle from the jack's outer tube, then your pliers to grab the upper miter gear (which may be red or black in your jack), handle bushing, and lower miter gear. Hold on to your jack's wheel before pulling out the dowel pin, then remove the flat washer and also the two roll pin pieces if it broke during the previous step.

If you have an older jack, you may see an iron bearing at the top of the inner screw instead of the flat washer you just saw and the shaft bushing you will see in the next step, but we will replace the iron bearing with the newer shaft bushing and flat washer parts that are included in the kit.

So, slide your jack's inner tube out of the outer one. If the iron bearing or shaft bushing and washer are on top of the inner screw, remove them.

If they are not there, use a table or other hard surface to get them unstuck from inside the outer tube. Use your punch or a screwdriver to help you completely unwind the inner screw.

Scrub the inner screw with a wire brush to remove any rust or debris, apply automotive or marine grease into the entire thread, then turn the screw all the way back into the nut. Apply grease to the flat washer, thrust bearing, and shaft bushing, then set them on top of the inner screw in that order, and be sure the bushing is chamfer side up.

Slide the inner tube all the way back inside of the outer tube and hold it in place as you set a new flat washer over the top of the inner screw. Use the small hole on the side of the jack and your punch to help you install a new dowel pin evenly spaced through its hole in the inner screw. Fit the slotted underside of your new lower miter gear over the pin, then place a new handle bushing in its hole so its flat end is facing down. Set a new upper miter gear next to the handle bushing so one of its holes is facing up, then slide your handle through the handle bushing and upper miter gear to the other side of the jack. Line up the hole in the handle with the hole in the upper miter gear, set a new roll pin into this opening, then use your punch and hammer to pound it completely in. Crank your jack's handle as you apply grease to this entire area, then re-install the top cap.
